Neuropsychological Testing

Neuropsychological testing is specialized testing concerned with behavioral expression of brain dysfunction. Specifically, it is designed to measure various types of cognitive abilities/deficits and personality characteristics associated with brain functioning. There are two purposes which prompt a neuropsychological evaluation:

  1. Aid in diagnosis of brain disorders such as
differentiating between psychiatric and neurological symptoms, to determine the location of brain dysfunction, to determine the the presence of learning disability and children’s behavioral problems, etc.

  2. Aid in patient care
to obtain detailed description of intellectual status and personality characteristics of an individual who has been previously diagnosed with brain dysfunction, in order to determine treatment, rehabilitation, after-care, etc.

Neuropsychological testing provides information which cannot be obtained by any other test and therefore, can supplement neurological testing such as MRI and CAT scans.
